Canning Bridge is a historic and iconic landmark located in Applecross, Western Australia, spanning the Canning River at its narrowest point where it meets the Swan River. The bridge connects the suburbs of Como and Applecross, serving as a vital link between Perth and Fremantle. Comprising two adjacent timber and steel-framed structures—one built in 1937 and the other in 1958—Canning Bridge is notable for being Perth’s only surviving large timber bridge, constructed using durable Western Australian timbers such as jarrah, karri, and wandoo. The site has a rich history, dating back to 1849 when the first bridge was built, and has played a significant role in the region’s transport and community life. Over the years, it has witnessed changing transport systems, hosted major events like the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and remained a popular spot for recreational activities, including fishing and rowing. The bridge is also valued for its contribution to the local cultural landscape, with nearby landmarks such as Raffles Hotel and the Applecross District Hall. Today, Canning Bridge continues to be a bustling hub for locals and visitors, blending heritage charm with modern community life.
