About the Group

We are an enthusiastic group of volunteers passionate about growing food and composting waste at four community garden sites in South Melbourne and surrounds. We host friendly working bees twice a month for composting, planting and garden maintenance while chatting and spending time with neighbours - all are welcome to come along! Bring along gloves, a trowel and garden snips if you have them. Volunteers are also needed to water and check on the garden beds between working bees.

The South Melbourne Sustainability Group is a community-driven initiative focused on promoting sustainable living and environmental stewardship through local engagement. The group actively manages and maintains several community gardens across South Melbourne and Port Melbourne, including Foundry Park, HH Skinner Reserve Pop-Up, Lyell Iffla Reserve, and Centenary Reserve Community Gardens. They organize regular working bees where volunteers come together to care for the gardens, practice bokashi composting, and share knowledge about sustainable growing practices. These activities not only foster environmental awareness but also strengthen community bonds by encouraging hands-on participation and social connection. The group provides a welcoming environment for those interested in community gardening, sustainability education, and reducing their environmental impact locally. It is a valuable platform for residents to engage with nature, learn about eco-friendly gardening, and contribute meaningfully to their neighborhood’s green spaces. The South Melbourne Sustainability Group supports sustainable living through practical action and community collaboration in the inner Melbourne area.
